Old Rembrandt Mall

The Old Rembrandt Mall redevelopment transformed a historic industrial landmark into a vibrant contemporary retail destination in the heart of Paarl. Originally established as part of the Rembrandt Tobacco Corporation’s manufacturing operations, the former cigarette factory played an important role in South Africa’s industrial history before production was relocated and the facility became vacant. The redevelopment reimagined the 19,000 m² site as a modern shopping centre comprising 42 retail stores, anchored by Pick n Pay and complemented by a diverse mix of fashion, lifestyle, and food offerings. The project successfully preserved the prominence of the landmark property while creating a dynamic retail environment that serves the needs of the local community and contributes to the ongoing revitalisation of the surrounding precinct. Key Projects was appointed as Project Manager, Principal Agent, and Tenant Coordinator. A significant challenge was the limited tenant commitment at the commencement of design and construction, resulting in extensive ongoing tenant-driven changes. Through robust change management, strict cost control, and proactive stakeholder coordination, the project was successfully delivered while maintaining strong relationships among developers, tenants, consultants, and contractors. Completed in March 2015, Old Rembrandt Mall stands as a successful example of adaptive reuse, transforming a historic manufacturing facility into a thriving commercial asset.
